The digital revolution is redefining possibilities in every sector. Prison systems worldwide are no exception to this. From virtual reality therapy sessions to smart robotic guards; innovative technology initiatives are transforming the prison environment. Beyond streamlining operations and enhancing security, these technology initiatives are crucial in fostering more open, respectful and normalised environments for prisoners.
In this blog post, we take a global tour to explore some of the impactful tech initiatives being implemented in prisons. We showcase the incredible potential of technology to create positive change, even in the most unexpected places.
Kenya’s prisons are embracing digital learning platforms. Tablets and computers are used to deliver educational content, from primary level lessons to university courses. The technology is adopted to safeguard that imprisonment does not put a halt to personal development and growth. These initiatives empower prisoners to take control of their learning journey, promoting a culture of respect and self-improvement.
South Korea is at the forefront of implementing a ‘smart prison’ system. They have utilised a wide range of technologies to enhance security and prisoner management. From robotic guards patrolling the corridors to wearable devices tracking prisoners health, South Korea’s correctional facilities are a testament to how technology can revolutionise prison management and security operations, but also contribute to a safe environment for all.
Colorado’s use of VR in its Juveniles and Young Adults Convicted as Adults Program (JYACAP) exemplifies the of power of immersive technology. Here long-term prisoners experience everyday tasks. Like shopping in a virtual supermarket, where a prisoner uses VR to learn shopping and interacting with modern technology like self-checkout stations. This initiative offers a safe environment to learn and adapt to a world that has changed significantly since their imprisonment.
In response to the challenge of providing adequate healthcare to prisoners in remote locations, New Zealand prisons have embraced telehealth. This technology allows prisoners to access medical and psychological support remotely. Thereby ensuring sufficient healthcare delivery and reducing the need for escorted external visits. Initially piloted at Spring Hill Facility in 2017, this approach has expanded to other sites. It reflects New Zealand’s commitment to leveraging technology for better healthcare management in prisons.
In an innovative twist, the United Kingdom has introduced prison-run coding bootcamps, where prisoners are taught coding skills. Beginning with the basics of web design through to more advanced web-development concepts. It includes a mix of tutor lead and peer-to-peer learning models which not only provides valuable tech skills but also promotes a sense of community and mutual support among the prisoners.
In this digital age, it is essential to recognise and expand upon these groundbreaking initiatives. By fully harnessing the power of technology, we can develop prison environments that are not only safer but also focused on effectively preparing prisoners for a successful reintegration into society.
