In our increasingly digitised world, technology has filtered into many aspects of modern life. Prisons too are not exempt from this shift. As the digital revolution moves forward, prisons are tackling the challenge of incorporating new digital technologies. This includes the integration of safer custody technology, striving for not only improved efficiency and safety, but also for the preservation and enhancement of human connections that are vital for rehabilitation and wellbeing.
Some critics argue that technology risks creating an impersonal environment, where crucial human interactions between staff and prisoners could be replaced by screens and automated systems. This concern is valid, given that rehabilitation often hinges on personal growth, empathy and the development of key social skills.
However, contrary to this viewpoint that when deployed thoughtfully, technology has the potential to enhance, rather than replace the connections between staff and prisoners.
In March 2020 Dr. Emma Palmer conducted an evaluation of digital technology in prisons in England and Wales. She reported
…relationships between prisoners were improved and tensions diminished, that relationships with staff had improved as prisoners were calmer, and that staff workloads were improved as prisoners were better able to manage routine administrative tasks themselves.
The implementation of digital communication tools such as email systems can facilitate frequent, less formal and efficient dialogue between prisoners and staff. Unlike face-to-face interactions that are limited by physical availability, digital communication tools offer flexibility and allow for ongoing engagement. This could potentially lead to deeper connections, improved mutual understanding and a more personalised approach to prisoner management and rehabilitation.
Advanced safer custody technology can enhance safety within prisons, creating an environment where prisoners feel more secure. When prisoners trust in the system’s ability to protect them, they are more likely to co-operate with staff, laying the foundation for a positive and productive relationship.
Innovative digital technology can open a variety of educational resources, vocational training and therapeutic programmes to prisoners. This access equips prisoners with valuable skills and psychological tools for life after prison. Staff can interact more effectively with prisoners, guiding their journey to self-improvement and reintegration into society.
Safer custody technology also enables the collection and analysis of digital data, offering insights about prisoners’ behaviour and needs. These insights equip staff with information to tailor their approach to each prisoner, thereby improving the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts and enriching the quality of interactions.
Maintaining family and community connections is crucial for prisoner wellbeing and successful reintegration back into the community. Digital technology such as virtual visitation, allows prisoners to keep in touch with their loved ones, regardless of geographical constraints. These interactions not only improve prisoner mental health and morale but also provide staff with deeper insights into their emotional wellbeing.
Far from posing a threat to human connection, digital technologies including safer custody technology in prisons offer a suite of tools to enhance the crucial relationship between prison staff and prisoners. The key is to see this technology as a tool to complement, not replace, human interaction. As we navigate this digital era, it’s essential to harness the potential of technology, to build bridges, not barriers, in our bid for effective prisoner rehabilitation.
